The power supply converts wall power into the regulated voltages used by the motherboard, processor, graphics card, drives, and fans. When it becomes unstable, the computer may appear completely dead—or it may work normally until gaming, rendering, or another demanding task increases the load.
Symptoms that can point toward the PSU
- No lights, fans, or response when the power button is pressed.
- The computer starts for a moment and immediately shuts off.
- Random restarts or black screens during games.
- A burning smell, electrical crackle, or visible smoke.
- Fans twitch but the system never completes startup.
- USB devices disconnect when the system is under load.

Why the paper-clip test is limited
Jumping the power-on pins may show that a PSU fan can spin, but it does not prove the unit produces stable voltage under load. Many modern power supplies also keep their fans off at low load, so fan behavior alone is not a dependable pass-or-fail test.
A proper diagnosis checks connections, verifies the system with known-good equipment when appropriate, and considers load behavior. Voltage can appear acceptable with no load and collapse when the graphics card begins drawing power.
Do not open the power-supply enclosure
The metal PSU box contains capacitors that may retain dangerous energy after the computer is unplugged. Internal PSU repair is not a normal DIY computer task. Replace or professionally service the complete unit rather than opening it.
Choosing a correct replacement
Wattage is only one factor. The replacement must fit the case, provide the required motherboard and GPU connectors, support the system’s transient load, and come from a dependable platform. An oversized number printed on a low-quality unit is not better than a properly sized quality supply.
Small-form-factor and manufacturer-built desktops may use proprietary dimensions or connectors. Confirm compatibility before purchasing a standard ATX supply.
What you can safely check
Test a different wall outlet, confirm the rear switch is on, reseat the external power cable, disconnect unnecessary USB accessories, and look for an obvious burnt smell without opening the PSU. If the computer starts intermittently, back up important data before more testing.
Bottom line
A power supply should be diagnosed, not blamed by default. Controlled testing prevents a customer from buying a PSU only to discover the motherboard or graphics card caused the same symptom.
